Characters

1) Eyes are standing near together (less than one eye diameter apart).
2) Dorsal fin beginns before eyes.
3) Lateral line curved on height of pectoral fins.
) Both eyes on left body side.
) Blind side without lateral line.
) Both pelvic fins about same size.
) Body colouration sand-like.
Usually around 12 cm, maximal up to 22 cm length.

Similar species

- Most of the other flatfish have the eyes on the right body side.
Brill - clearly round body shape; eyes in more distance from each other (more than one eye diameter).
Turbot - clearly round body shape; eyes in more distance from each other (more than one eye diameter).
Topknot - body shape deeper, almost like a square; dorsal fin originating on upper jaw; pelvic and anal fins fused; doral and anal fin directly connected to caudal fin.

Biology

Prefers moody grounds in 10 to 400 m depth. Spawn between July and September.

Diet

Feeds on small bottom-living organisms like worms and crustaceans.

Importance

Of no commercial importance.
