Characters

1) Mouth large (multiple times of eye diameter).
2) First fin rays of dorsal fin standing alone.
3) Pelvic fins with long basis.
4) Distinct caudal peduncle.
) Both eyes on the left body side.
) Body surface covered with small scales (feels smooth).
) Body colouratio very variable: upside dark, brownish or greenish, with hell and dark spots; blind side whitish.
Usually below 60 cm, maximal up to 75 cm length and 8 kg weight.

Similar species

Turbot - bony tubercles on body upper side; body thicker and more rhombic.
Topknot - Bauch- und Afterflossen verwachsen; Rücken- und Afterflosse mit Schwanzflosse verbunden.

Biology

Lives on the bottom of sandy and mixed undergrounds.

Diet

Feeds mainly on bottom living fish, like sand eel and gobies, as well as on crustaceans.

Importance

Commercially used.
