Characters

1) Mouth large (multiple times of diameter of eye).
2) Pelvic fins with long basis.
3) Strong bony tubercles on entire surface.
4) Distinct caudal peduncle.
) Both eyes on the left body side.
) Colouration very variable: upper surface light to dark brown, greyish or sand-like, with dark to green spots and blots; blind side whitish.
Usually below 50 cm, max. up to 100 cm length and 25 kg weight.

Similar species

Brill - without bony tubercles on the body surface; front part on dorsal fin with free fin rays; body less thick and more elongated.
Topknot - without bony tubercles on the body surface; pelvic fins grown together with anal fin; dorsal and anal fins connected with caudal fin.

Biology

Bottom-living on sandy and stony grounds down to 70 m depth.

Diet

Feeds on bottom-living fish, mussels and crustaceans.

Importance

Commercially used: not in large amounts, but highly valued.
