Characters

1) Long anal fin.
2) Mouth opening only as long as eye diameter.
) Mouth terminal to slightly sub-terminal.
) Body high, laterally very compressed.
) Uniformly silvern, origin of pectoral and pelvic fins often coloured reddish.
Meist 20 bis 30 cm, max. 36 cm Länge.

Similar species

Bream - snout longer than eye diameter; bases of pectoral and pelvic fins never redish.
Blue bream - anal fin even longer, 39 to 46 rays (vs. 22 to 26 in silver bream)
Vimba - snout pre-bulged.
Roach - basis of anal fin slightly shorter than basis of dorsal fin.

Biology

Lives in small groups in densly overgrown watersides of slow-flowing or standing waters; there they also find their spawning areas.

Diet

They have a broad spectrum of diet, mainly they feed on zoo- and phytoplankton.

Importance

Of small commercial importance in local areas, mainly in eastern Europe.

Not endangered.
