Characters

1) Mouth terminal to slightly superior.
2) Anal fin very long.
3) Lower part of caudal fin longer than upper part.
) Body moderately high.
) Coloured uniformely silvern; edges of dorsal, caudal and anal fins often darker.
Often 20 to 30 cm, max. 50 cm length.

Similar species

Silver bream - mouth terminal to slightly inferior; anal fin shorter 22 to 26 rays (vs. 39 to 46 in blue bream).
Bream - mouth terminal to slightly inferior; anal fin shorter 26 to 31 rays (vs. 39 to 46 in blue bream).
Vimba - snout pre-bulged.

Biology

Lives in small groups in free waters of slow-flowing waters and estuaries, seldom also in lakes. For spawning they migrate upstream and prefer densely grown and shallow watersides to ley their eggs.

Diet

They feed on zooplankton, small bottom organisms and algae.

Importance

Of no commercial importance.

Endangerment

Strong decline and endangerement of stocks because of high vulnerability to water pollution.
