Characters

1) Mouth nose-like elongated (pre-bulged).
2) Anal fin long (about two times length of dorsal fin).
) Body moderately high.
) Often coloured silvern with dark "nose"; during spawning season back dark-grey to black and abdomen bright orange.
Often 20 to 30 cm, max. 50 cm length.

Similar species

Blue bream - snout not pre-bulged.
Maraena - without adipose fin.

Biology

Lives as a swarm fish in estuaries and brackish waters, but also occurs in lakes. For spawning they migrate up stream to lay their eggs in shallow and sandy watersides.

Diet

They feed on bottom-living invertebrates, like molluscs and insect larvae.

Importance

Of little commercial importance.

Endangerment

Due to damming and water pollution strong decline and endangerment of the populations.
