Characters

1) Dorsal fin originates well behind origin of pelvic fins.
2) One row of keeled scales between pelvic and anal fins.
) Body relatively high.
) Body coloured uniformely silvern; pelvic and anal fins coloured in a bright red; eyes often yellowish.
Often 20 to 30 cm, max. 45 cm length.

Similar species

Roach - dorsal fin and pelvic fins originate on the same level; no keel between pelvic and anal fin; mouth only slightly turned upwards.
Ide - more slender; smaller scales, 55 to 61 in lateral line (vs. 40 to 42 in rudd).
Silver bream - basis of anal fin at minimum double the lenght than basis of dorsal fin.

Biology

Lives in small groups in calm, shallow watersides of large rivers with dense vegetation and soft ground, but also in estuaries and brackisch waters.

Diet

Feeds on plant material, rarely on small organisms.

Importance

Of low importance as foodfish, but used for angling and as bait fish.

Endangerment

Not endangered.
