Characters

1) Mouth terminal, with small upwards directed mouth opening.
2) Outer edge of anal fin slightly curved inwards.
) Body moderately high and laterally compressed.
) Coloured brownish to sivern; abdomen lighter; mainly in young individuals red pelvic and anal fins.
Often 30 to 50 cm, max. 80 cm length.

Similar species

Chub - margin of anal fin curved outwards; larger scales, 44 to 46 in lateral line (vs. 55 to 61 in ide); older specimens almost round in cross-section.
Dace - mouth slightly inferior and almost horizontal; body more slender; 47 to 53 scales in lateral line (vs. 55 to 61 in ide).
Roach - body more deep; larger scales, 49 to 48 in lateral line (vs. 55 to 56 in ide).
Rudd - body more deep; larger scales, 40 to 43 in lateral line (vs. 55 to 56 in ide).

Biology

Prefers living in upper, faster flowing river regions, but also occurs in estuaries and brackish waters. In the spawning season they migrate stream upwards, because they depend on sandy-gravel grounds to lay eggs.

Diet

They feed on small invertebrates and plant material.

Importance

Commercially important as food fish, for aquaculture and for angling.

Endangerment

Strong decline of stocks mainly due to river damming and therefor lacking of spawning areas.
