Characters

1) Head profile on eye level curved very strongly outwards.
2) Dorsal and anal fins extended sickle-like.
3) Pelvic fins originate before dorsal fin.
) Dorsal and anal fins with scales.
) Body height and laterally compressed; uniformely silvern black to blueish; fins often with white edges.
Up to 100 cm length.

Similar species

Atlantic pomfret - pectoral, pelvic and dorsal fins originate at about same level; anterior part of anal fin only slightly elongated.
Rough pomfret - head profile flat to concave.
Silver pomfret - dorsal and anal fins originating about at same level; diameter of eye larger than lenght of mouth.

Biology

Migrates much; mainly in free waters, rarely near the coast. Adults often solitary, young individuals in smaller schoals. Reproduction takes place mainly in the suptropics.

Diet

Feeds on crustaceans and squid.

Importance

Of no commercial importance, as nowhere abundant.
