Characters

1) Profile above eye plane to slightly curved inwards.
2) Dorsal and anal fins extending sickle-like.
3) Pelvic fins beginning well before dorsal fin.
) Dorsal and anal fins with scales.
) Body high and laterally compressed; uniformely silvern black to brownish.
Up to 50 cm length.

Similar species

Atlantic pomfret - head profile rounded; pelvic, pectoral and dorsal fin origin at about same level.
Big-scale pomfret - head profile strongly curved outwards.
Silver pomfret - dorsal and anal fins originating about at same level; diameter of eye larger than lenght of mouth.

Biology

Occurs on the continental shelf, not near the coast; prefers warmer waters. Reproduction mainly takes place in the subtropics.

Diet

Feeds on smaller fish and crustaceans.

Importance

Of no commercial importance, as nowhere abundant.
