Characters

1) Mouth superior.
2) Incomplete lateral line (not reaching along entire side).
3) Pelvic fins end before origin of dorsal fin.
) Body very elongated; uniformely silvery with dark blueish band on caudal part of flanks.
Often 6 to 8 cm, up to max. 12 cm length.

Similar species

Bleak - lateral line complete; anal fin much longer (more than half the distance from origin of anal fin to origin of caudal fin).
Vendace - with adipose fin.
Herring - larger, less steep mouth; pelvic fin origin below dorsal fin.
Sprat - larger, less steep mouth; belly serrated (with scutes); anal fin originates clearly posterior of end of dorsal fin.

Biology

Lives near the surface in swarms, often near dense vegetation in slow-flowing oder standing waterbodies. In the spawning season pairs of them meet together. Females deposit their eggs (about 150) in form of a band on a plant stem; males undertake brood care.

Diet

They feed on zoo- and phytoplankton, as well as on insects.

Importance

Of no commercial importance.

Endangerment

Presumably not endangered.
