Characters

1) Adipose fin present.
2) Mouth small and terminal to slightly superior.
) Glancing silvern, flanks coloured often blueish-greenish.
Often 15 to 20 cm, max. 40 cm length.

Similar species

Maraena - snout protruding.
Bleak - no adipose fin; anal fin much longer (longer than dorsal fin).
Herring - no adipose fin; mouth bigger and clearly superior.
Smelt - mouth larger; lateral line incomplete.

Biology

Species living in fresh water as well as in salt water; often migrates from salt into fresh waters because of reproduction purposes; reaching spawning maturity with 2 to 5 years.

Diet

They mainly feed on small zooplankton like crustaceans and their larvae.

Importance

Used commercially as foodfish.

Endangerment

Presumably not endangered.
