Characters

1) First dorsal fin beginns behind origin of pelvic fin base.
) 5 gill-slits.
) Sandy or brown covered by numerous small dark spots.
Usually 75 cm, to max. 100 cm length.

Similar species

Blackmouth catshark - with scutes on dorsal margin of caudal peduncle; inner side of mouth black.

Biology

Benthic down to max. 550 m depth, usually between 50 m and 250 m depth. Lays about 90 to 115 eggs each year, all year round, usually twined around seaweeds or seegras.

Diet

Bottom-living invertebrates and smaller fish.

Importance

Little importance. In England occasionally traded as "Rock Salmon" and in the south of France traded as "Saumonette".

Endangerment

Not endangered.
