Characters

1) Slightly inferior mouth.
2) Long barbel on chin present.
3) Basis between first and second anal fin separated (space in between).
) Three dorsal fins.
) Body moderately high (less than 1,5-fold height of head).
) Body sides copreous, brownish to yellowish, abdomen silvern-light.
Often 10 to 20 cm, maximal up to 35 cm length.

Similar species

Bib - body higher, more than 1,5-fold the heigth of head; basis of pectoral fin with striking black spot; basis of anal fins touching each other.
Norway pout - body higher, more than 1,5-fold the heigth of head; basis of pectoral fin with striking black spot; basis of anal fins touching each other.
Cod - lateral line accentuated in white; clear distance between first and second anal fin.
Whiting - barbel very small or missing.

Biology

Lives in small swarms near soft grounds in up to 300 m depth; often resident to its habitat.

Diet

Feeds on small invertebrates, mainly on bottom living crustaceans.

Importance

Is processed to fish meal.
