Characters

1) Upper lip not thickened.
2) Golden-yellow spot on operculum.
) Small mouth opening (not reaching to the eye).
) Two, clearly separated dorsal fins.
) Body silvern, head and front part of body also shining golden; abdomen lighter.
Usually below 35 cm, up to 50 cm length.

Similar species

Thinlip grey mullet - black spot on origin of pectoral fin; pectoral fin less pointed.
Thicklip grey mullet - thick upper lip with large papillae.

Biology

Swarm fish near the coast, close to the surface; also present in estuaries, but not in low-salt waters; also in heavily contaminanted waters. Spawning season: July to November; eggs are floating due to drops of oil on the surface. Live expectancy up to 9 years.

Diet

Omnivorous: mainly on organic particles of the upper bottom layer.

Importance

Food fish, also kept in aquaculture.
