Characters

1) Both eyes on right body side.
2) Big mouth opening (reaches till under eye).
3) Lateral line hardly curved.
) Dorsal fin beginns above eye.
) Rough scales.
) Body surface grey-brown; blind side whitish.
Usually below 45 cm, max. up to 80 cm length.

Similar species

- Most flatfish with both eyes on right side have distinctly smaller mouths (mouth ends in front of eye).
Halibut - body colouration darker; lateral line with distinct cruve above pectoral fin; caudal fin straight or slightly curved inwards.

Biology

Prefers cooler waters, lives in the Sea and in brackisch waters on loose grounds in 10 to 400 m depth. May become up to 30 years old.

Diet

Feeds on small bottom-living animals like brittle stars, worms and crustaceans, but also on sand eels and young cods.

Importance

Is commercially catched for fishmeal production, otherwise regarded as by-catch.
