Characters

1) 8 pairs of barbels, on every upper and under side of head 2 pairs of barbels.
2) Adipose fin present.
3) First ray of dorsal- and pelvic fins transformed to bony spines.
) Skin without scales, lateral line well visible.
Often 20 to 30 cm, up to 50 cm length.

Similar species

Catfish - only 1 pair of barbels present on upper side of head; no adipose fin.

Biology

Nocturnal, bottom living in clear, calm and slow-flowing waters with a dense vegetation. Adults burrow groove-like nests, in which the eggs and larvae are defended by the males.

Diet

They feed on small invertebrates, crustaceans, small fish and fish fry, but also on plant material and algae.

Importance

Locally commercially used as popular food fish, where as in other parts regarded as a fish damaging the area.

Endangerment

Not native.
