Characters

1) Pectoral fins big and wing-like.
2) Abdominal line keel-like.
3) Dorsal fin small and originating well behind.
) Mouth superior.
) Body elongated, coloured homogenously silvern.
Often about 25 to 35 cm, up to max. 60 cm length.

Biology

Lives in swarms at the surfaces of open waters of slow-flowing reaches, big lakes and areas of brackish waters. In the spawning season they migrate in big swarms upwards to prevent that the eggs laid in free water drift off into the sea.

Diet

They feed on zooplankton like crustaceans, larvae and insects, as adult often also on small fish.

Importance

Of little commecial importance.

Endangerment

In the distribution area Baltic sea very rare and strongly endangered, in other areas of the distribution area considered as not endangered.
