Characters

1) Long dorsal fin (basis about three times as long as basis of anal fin).
2) Upper edge of dorsal fin straight or slightly curved inwards.
) High body, no barbels.
Often 15 to 20 cm, max. 45 cm length.

Similar species

Crucian carp - upper edge of the dorsal fin is bend outwards; often with a dark spot on the tail stem
Carp - 4 barbels; strongly elongated dorsal fin; much larger scales
Bitterling - often only about 6 cm long, longer anal fin (just a bit shorter than the dorsal fin), lateral line only on 5 to 6 scales (continuous in the prussian carp)

Biology

Very adaptive towards different water conditions, prefers small, calm and shallow lakes or ponds with very dense vegetation, but also occurs in slow-flowing waters.

Diet

They feed on small invertebrates and plants.

Importance

Little commercial use as food fish.
