Characters

1) One pair of barbels.
2) Caudal fin only slightly emarginated.
3) Very small scales (95 to 100 along lateral line).
) Caudal peduncle very high.
) Pectoral fins of males rounded caudally and reaching anal fin; pectoral fins of females pointed and shorter.
) Body dark greenish with golden glance, fins blackish.
Often 20 to 40 cm, max. 70 cm length.

Similar species

Carp - four barbels; very long dorsal fin; much larger scales.

Biology

Living solitary near the bottom; often lives in shallow, densely vegetated lakes, poor of oxygen and with muddy grounds. Very adaptive, are able to endure extreme temperatures and very low oxygen concentration by falling into a sort of rigor.

Diet

They feed on small invertebrates and soft plant material.

Importance

Commercially used as food fish.
