Characters

1) Adipose fin present.
2) Redish iridescent operculum and lateral band.
3) Entire back and flanks with dark spots (also on dorsal, adipose and caudal fin); abdomen lighter.
Often 60 to 70 cm, max. 120 cm length.

Similar species

Pink salmon - no redish-pinkish lateral band.
Atlantic salmon - no redish-pinkish lateral band; caudal fin without dark spots.
Sea trout - no redish-pinkish lateral band; caudal fin without dark spots.
Asp - adipose fin absent.

Biology

Wild populations with natural reproduction very rare in Europe; native in Northamerica and Northeast Asia.

Diet

Predominantly feeds on molluscs, but also on smaller fish.

Importance

High commercial importance as food fish; very often kept in aquaculture.

Endangerment

Not endangered; not native in the area of the Baltic Sea.
