Characters

1) Mouth with strong fang teeth reaches till under eye.
2) Two dorsal fins, front one with strong spines.
3) Many dark spots on caudal and dorsal fins.
) Colouration of back greenish to grey, colouration of abdomen white; flanks yellow to brownish with dark spots and vertical stripes (becomming lighter in older specimens).
Usually 50 cm, max. up to 100 cm length.

Similar species

Perch - with black spot on hind edge of first dorsal fin; more distinct black striped on the sides.
Ruffe - both dorsal fins fused together.
European seabass - black spot on operculum; body uniform silvery.

Biology

Lives mainly in slow flowing rivers and estuaries, but also expandes into the Baltic Sea. Reproduction season from April to May; eggs are layed into a pothole on the ground and are defended by the male.

Diet

Feeds on smaller fish, often under 10 cm length.

Importance

Well-liked food and sports fish.
