Characters

1) 6 free standing spines in front of dorsal fin.
2) First spines of anal fin standing apart.
3) Dorsal fin, anal and caudal fins with black tips.
) (Often) 3 to 5 black, oval spots along lateral line.
) Colouration silver shining, with whitish gloom.
Usually 30 cm, max. up to 70 cm length.

Similar species

Atlantic horse-mackerel - with two dorsal fins.

Biology

Lives in smaller groups along the coast, in clear waters. Spawns in summer; eggs are layed in free water.

Diet

Feeds on fish, crustaceans and snails.

Importance

In southern Europe of commercial importance; in northern Europe without importance.
