Characters

1) First dorsal fin modified to a sucking disc, located on the head and reaching till height of end of pectoral fins.
2) Projecting lower jaw.
) Body dark grey-brown.
Usually 40 cm, max. 80 cm length.

Biology

Occurs down to 100 m depth; mainly sucked on the underside of sharks and rays, but also on other big fish and turtles. Remoras occasionally are also encountered while swimming free.

Diet

Feeds on food rests and parasites (often crustaceans) of transport host.

Of no commercial importance.
