Characters

1) Long, not divided dorsal fin, anterior part with spines.
2) Black spot at beginning of dorsal fin.
3) Black spot on upper edge of caudal peduncle.
) Body usually reddish or orange, more rarely greyish or greenish; without striking pattern.
Usually 10 to 12 cm, max. 18 cm length.

Similar species

Corkwing wrasse - thicker lips; black spot behind eye and on lower edge of caudal peduncle.
Ballan wrasse - thicker lips; light spots on scales and fins.

Biology

Lives on rocky substrate and seagras areas down to 50 m depth. The spawning area is defended by the male. Spawns during summer months. Becomes sexually mature with about 2 years.

Diet

Feeds on crustaceans, snails and bryozoan.

Of no commercial importance.
