Characters

1) On pair of long barbels at caudal end of upper jaw.
2) Dark stripe in front of eye to upper jaw.
3) Big dark spots along lateral line.
) Body very slender and laterally slightly compressed in diameter.
) Coloured brownish with several dark spots on back and flanks; dorsal and caudal fins with dark pattern.
Often 8 to 15 cm, max. 20 cm length.

Similar species

Barbel - two pairs of barbles on upper jaw; longest dorsal fin ray like a spine and serrated on posterior margin; without stripe in front of eye; usually much larger body size.

Biology

During day time near bottom, often in swarms, preferable in clear flowing waterbodies. Spawns in summer in sandy watersides.

Diet

Feeds on small bottom-living organisms and algae.

Importance

A food fish despite small size. Often used as bait fish.
