Characters

1) Very small pelvic fins.
2) Anal fin long (about 2/3 of total length).
3) Caudal fin slender and pointed.
) Body colouration yellowish to brown with unregular distributed darker spots.
Usually 30 to 35 cm, max. up to 50 cm length.

Similar species

Viviparous eelpout - caudal fin not developed distinctly; thick-lipped mouth.
Butterfish - caudal fin rounded, black eye-spots on back.

Biology

Lives bottom-orientated in holes in soft grounds in 30 to 200 m depth. Sexually mature with 3 years. From December to January 600 to 1100 eggs are layed in the ground.

Diet

Feeds on crustaceans, worms and other inverterbrates.

Importance

Of no commercial importance.
