Characters

1) inferior mouth (maxilla overlaps the lower jaw).
2) dorsal fin begins with about end of pectoral fin.
Often 1 to 1,5 m, up to max. 3 m length.

Similar species

Eel - mouth supterior; dorsal fin starts distant behind end of pectoral fin.
Sea lamprey - seven external gill slits; no pectoral fins.
River lamprey - seven external gill slits; no pectoral fins.

Biology

Sexual mature with 5 to 15 years. Adults die after spawning in the open sea. After hatching the larvae live in open waters for 1 to 2 years. Adult body shape from about 15 cm on.

Diet

Feeding on fish, crustaceans and squid.

Importance

Commercially used as food fish.

Endangerment

Presumably not endangered.
