Characters

1) Mouth inferior.
2) Both eyes on the right body side.
3) Dorsal and anal fins with distinct black stripes: about every 6th fin ray is coloured black.
) Pectoral fin on the blind side very reduced (only 1 to 2 fin rays).
) Eye side sand-like coloured, yellowish to brownish; blind side white.
Up to 15 cm length.

Similar species

Common sole - pectoral fin not reduced on blind side; without stripe pattern on dorsal and anal fin.
Witch - mouth terminal; dorsal fin beginns only above the eye (vs. in front of eye in solenette).

Biology

Bottom-living on sandy grounds down to 450 m depth.

Diet

Feeds mainly on small bottom-living crustaceans, but also on worms and thin-shelled mussels.

Importance

Of no commercial importance.
