Characters

1) Each pectoral fin possesses three free mobile fin rays.
2) Pectoral fins short (reaching at most origin of anal fin).
3) Often dark spot on first dorsal fin.
) Head covered with strong bony plates.
) Body colouration from light-brown to dark-brown, back darker, abdomen whitish.
Usually 30 cm, maximum up to 50 cm length.

Similar species

Tub gurnard - large pectoral fins, reaching well behind of origin of anal fin; pectoral fin with striking blue edge; lateral line feels smooth; body colouration reddish.

Biology

Occurs often over soft or mixed grounds; during night swimming also in freewater; down to 150 m depth; during summer time more likely to be encountered near the coast. Spawns from early to late summer.

Diet

Feeds on bottom-living invertebrates and small fish.

Food fish, is fished commercially.
